Advocacy in Action: Elevating Provider Voices in Prince George’s County
A key focus of our advocacy this year has been the Prince George’s County Direct Support Professional (DSP) Supplement. Recognizing the critical role DSPs play in delivering high-quality care and support, the Prince George’s Provider Council along with our Provider members met with County Council members and the County Executive to emphasize the importance of sustaining and strengthening this investment.
These discussions focused on workforce stability, the ongoing challenges Community Providers face with recruitment and retention, and the direct impact that competitive compensation has on service quality across the county.
As a result of these efforts, the DSP Supplement was once more included in the County Executive’s proposed FY27 budget. However, the funding remains flat despite a 2% increase in the overall county budget, which is particularly concerning given that the county’s minimum wage increased by 2% in January 2026.
We had requested an additional $2.3 million bringing the total to $6,885,000 to support a 2% increase in DSP wages and related expenses. This request aligns with CB-005 (minimum wage bill) passed last year, which allows the county to adjust support as minimum wage rises.
We will continue working with county leaders to secure this increase and ensure DSP wages keep pace with rising costs. Together, we will continue to advocate, collaborate, and ensure that the people served by our Provider members remain at the forefront of decision-making in Prince George’s County.
